Papers here have been organized by their classification(s) or type(s) of publication. Categorization is an editorial judgment regarding the character and purpose of papers in this collection. They can be useful, but like all generalizations, readers should hold these somewhat cautiously and critically. Multiple categories may be applied to a single title. For, example, the Bum Hill Gazette is classified as a child’s paper, a community paper, and an emergency-disaster response paper. It was one of the first papers published after the Great Earthquake and Fire of San Francisco in 1906. Edited by a child, it provided news and encouragement to community members forced to live on the streets of their destroyed city amid rubble and aftershocks.
